HIS 203 Week 1 DQ 2 Origins of Early Colonies

Short description

Although remembered today as the foundation upon which English North America was established, the colony of Jamestown came quite close to abandonment several times in its early history, and suffered from extraordinarily high mortality rates for decades. By contrast, despite one bad winter at the onset, the New England colonies of Plymouth and Massachusetts quickly stabilized and flourished. Analyze the differences between the origins and early histories of the Chesapeake and New England colonies to explain this anomaly. Consider the following factors: a. Motivations for colonization. b. Type of people settling in the colonies. c. Relations with Native Americans. d. Social and political structures of the colonies and other pertinent factors.
Also discuss the histories of one of the following colonies to provide further evidence: South Carolina, Pennsylvania, or New York.

In answering this question, utilize the primary sources below in conjunction with your text book: a. Instructions by way of advice, for the intended voyage to Virginia b. A model of Christian charity
