An event such as the American Revolution can be difficult for Americans today to understand fully because it plays such a central role in national mythology that most Americans come to the topic with fixed ideas that prevent them from approaching the topic objectively. A potential way to overcome this issue is to view the American Revolution from a different perspective. In this post, consider the events of the Imperial Crisis from 1765 to 1775 through the eyes of British authorities with particular regard to: a. the goals which Britain had in mind when it passed the various acts to which colonists objected; b. the justifications which Americans offered for their objections and how those objections might have sounded to British ears; c. the various means by which the colonists actively resisted British measures; d. Britain’s responses to colonial resistance.
