HIS 203 Week 5 DQ 2 Factors in the Confederate Defeat

Short description

Almost from the moment the Civil War ended, Southern apologists set to work constructing the myth that northern industrialism might have made Union victory inevitable, but that noble white southerners had taken to the field of battle nonetheless in order to fight for their region’s honor and principles. Yet when the Civil War began, the general sentiment in the South, and among many objective foreign observers, was that the war would likely conclude with the Confederacy gaining its independence. Identify the advantages that the Confederacy seemed to possess in 1861, and explain how the Union was able to overcome those advantages. In your response, refer to the following factors: a. The economies and infrastructures of the two sides. b. Their respective political leadership. c. Their militaries, particularly their generals. d. Civilian morale, including the involvement of women. e. The role of slavery and of slaves themselves. f. The war aims of the respective sides.
Synthesize your assessment of these factors to answer the following question: What factor was most significant in producing Union victory and Confederate defeat? When responding to this question, incorporate material from one of the following televised lectures or discussions on the Civil War: a. Monitoring and financing the Civil War b. The home front of the Civil War c. Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis as commanders-in-chief d. The Civil War politics of the Confederacy
